A Scrum Master is whoever facilitates the Scrum framework: they run the events (Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Retrospective), remove impediments and work the Definition of Done with the team. Working by project they join per engagement: one specific team, one specific period and one measurable delivery outcome. Their boundary: the agile coach works the transformation of the organisation, and the Product Owner decides what gets built and in which order.
You prepare the events so they last just enough and decide something, you chase the impediments until they have owner and date, and you work the Definition of Done so that 'finished' means the same to everyone. You also decide what does not get done: a ceremony that no longer contributes gets removed, and stopping the extra meeting is part of the engagement. The framework belongs to the team; the craft of making it work is yours.

What does a contract Scrum Master do?
They facilitate the Scrum framework per engagement: they run the events, remove impediments, protect the process and work the Definition of Done with one specific team over a defined period, with no payroll in between.
Can I live from the pure craft, without the hybrid?
The Spanish title usually comes glued to developer, QA or SAP consultancy because companies hire dual profiles. The pure engagement exists and here it arrives like that: a team that needs facilitation, with the scope closed before starting.
How much to charge as a contract Scrum Master?
The mechanism marks it, not a rate: full or part-time dedication, number of teams, presence and years facilitating. The public references of the market do not square with each other, so the price gets built by the scope of the engagement, never by the loose day.
PSM or CSM to join the collective?
They are the conversational entry, not the proof: here what gets certified is the counted practice, events run and impediments solved in real teams. The badge helps open the door; holding the engagement is another thing.
Is there still demand for Scrum Masters?
The drop you read in search is the interest in getting trained: courses and certifications. The engagement stays: 108 active ads in Spain ask for or mention Scrum Master, most with the hybrid role in the title (Shakers market analysis, n=31,957, September 2026).
How does it differ from agile coach and Product Owner?
The agile coach trains the whole organisation and the Product Owner decides what gets built. Your territory is the team and its delivery: if the engagement grows towards transformation or towards product, it gets declared and shared.
